You will need white fabric for the background.

  1. Cut one 2-1/2″ x 22″ strip of blue fabric provided by block party.
  2. Cut one 2-1/2″ x 22″ strip of your white fabric.
  3. Cut two 4-1/2″ blue squares from the fabric provided by block party. Cut two 4-1/2″ white squares from your fabric.

Make a Strip Set to make the 4 patch units.

  1. Use a ¼ inch seam to sew the 22″ white and blue fabric strips together along their long edges. Carefully press the seam allowance towards the blue strip.
  2. Cut eight 2-1/2″ wide segments from this strip. Each of the pieces will be 2 ½ X 4 ½.  See Diagram 1.

Make the Small Four-Patch Units

  1. Arrange the 2-1/2″ segments cut from the blue and white strip-set into four pairs as shown below – diagram 2.
  2. Sew each pair together to make 4 four-patch units.
  3. Press the new seam allowances in either direction.

Use the 4 ½ inch squares and the 4 patch units to make 2 Double 4-Patch units as shown in Diagram 3. Sew the squares together using ¼ inch seams.

Diagram 4 shows a completed quilt using these blocks.

The block will finish at 8 inches (unfinished at 8 ½ inches).

Please do not square up your blocks. Turn in your blocks and your name on a small piece of paper in at the December meeting for the drawing. Good Luck!!
