January 2014 Block Party Pattern

This month we will make a black and yellow star block with half-square triangles.

• Pick out a yellow fabric from your stash.
• Cut four (4) 5 inch squares from the black fabric provided by Block Party.
• Cut four (4) 5 inch squares from your yellow fabric.
• Cut one (1) 4 1/2 inch square from your yellow fabric.
• Make 8 half-square triangles with the 5 inch squares. Place the yellow squares right sides together with the black squares.
• Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the yellow fabric (solid line in diagram).
• Sew 1/4 inch from each side of the drawn line (dotted lines in diagram).
• Cut the squares apart on the drawn line to get 2 half-square triangles.
• Press the seam to the darker color and trim all 8 half-square triangles to 4 1/2 inches.
• Place the blocks like the diagram below.
• Sew the blocks together with a 1/4 inch seam for a block measuring 12 1/2 inches
