Pick out a leaf colored fabric from your stash. You can pick anything from spring green, yellow, or bright maple leaf red from the fall.
- Cut two (2) 5 inch squares and two (2) 4 1/2 inch squares from the cream fabric
provided by Block Party. - Cut two (2) 5 inch squares and three (3) 4 1/2 inch squares from your leaf fabric.
- Also cut one (1) 1 1/4 X 7 inch rectangle from your leaf fabric.
- Use the 5 inch squares for the half-square triangles.
- Make 4 green/cream half-square triangles with 2 leaf squares and 2 cream squares.
- Place the squares right sides together.
- Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the fabric (solid line in diagram).
- Sew 1/4 inch from each side of the drawn line (dotted line in diagram).
- Cut the squares apart on the drawn line to get 2 half-square triangles.
- Press the seam to the darker color and trim all 4 half-square triangles to 4 1/2 inches.
- To make the stem start by cutting one of the 4 1/2 inch cream squares in half diagonally (solid
line in diagram). - You will be sewing the leaf 1 3/4 X 7 inch piece in between the 2 triangles. Crease the
triangles to find the mid-way point. Crease the leaf stem to find the mid-way point. - Matching the mid points, sew the stem strip to one triangle. Press seam toward stem strip.
Sew the other triangle to the stem, again matching mid points. Press seam towards stem. - Square up this block to measure 4 1/2 inches, ensuring that the leaf stem stays in the middle
of the block. - Place the blocks like the diagram below. Sew the blocks together with a 1/4 inch seam for a
block measuring 12 1/2 inches.
